Project Bonaventure - phase 2 and 3
The bird’s eye perspective provides a graphic representation of the proposed modifications within the zone currently occupied by the Bonaventure Expressway. The transition of the Bonaventure Expressway to the industrial park enables the construction of a vast riverfront park that will link the recreational networks of the Verdun borough, Jean-Drapeau Park, the Lachine Canal and the Old Port through bicycle paths and pedestrian trails (phase 2). It also weaves new links between Pointe-Saint-Charles and the riverfront. Furthermore, the expressway’s demolition enables the development of vast tracts of lands west of the industrial park that are currently inaccessible.
The demolition of the elevated highway structure, starting from Victoria Bridge, and its replacement with a boulevard and a bridge over the Lachine Canal enables the downtown core to be extended up to the Peel basin (phase 3). The removal of the expressway’s structure allows the development of significant residential potential. Pierre-Dupuy Avenue and Riverside Street are reconfigured to improve access to the area’s industrial and port operations.
The Bonaventure Expressway, between Brennan and Saint-Jacques streets, is replaced by a boulevard whose driving surfaces are located on both sides of a central block (phase 1). This configuration revives the overall design of the area’s historical layout by reconnecting faubourg des Récollets and Griffintown. The cleared land will then promoted in the same spirit as the current operations in faubourg des Récollets, Cité du Multimédia, the Quartier international de Montréal and the Quartier de l’innovation. These modifications will transform Montréal’s main gateway into an inhabited, vibrant borough acting as an extension of the downtown core.
